Jean Monnet Activities

Jean Monnet Activities support the teaching, research and study of themes relating to the European integration and they are conducted by the European Commission through EACEA, the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency.

These activities are grouped together in Erasmus+, the new EU Programme in the fields of education, training, youth and sport for the period 2014-2020.

Erasmus+, moreover, promotes mobility programs in- and outside the EU borders (Key Activity 1) and supports cooperation for innovation and new partnerships (Key Activity 2). It also promotes reforms of the different European Policies (Key activity 3).


Jean Monnet Activities are open worldwide and are structured in the following Actions:

  • Jean Monnet Modules: short teaching programmes (or courses) in the field of European Union studies at a higher education institution. Each Module has a minimum duration of 40 teaching hours per academic year.
  • Jean Monnet Chairs: three-year-teaching posts with a specialisation in European Union studies for university professors. A JM Chair must be hold by only one professor, who must provide the minimum of 90 teaching hours per academic year.
  • Jean Monnet Centres of Excellence: focal points of competence and knowledge on European Union subjects, they gather the expertise of high level experts. The academic responsibility of a Centre must be assumed by a Jean Monnet Chair holder.
